SMALL BEGINNINGS

The ministry started when the Anglican Church, St. John the Divine, based in Randfontein on the West Rand,  Gauteng, South Africa, asked a member of the congregation (Sister Pam) to attend an AIDS 'trainer of trainers' course, as more and more people were turning to the church for assistance in dealing with the trauma of HIV and AIDS.

Sister Pam completed the course and began caring for a number of patients in Toekomsrus, a township bordering Randfontein. Word spread and soon she was asked to train others who could care for the sick.

Before long, caregivers in other townships and the rural areas got to hear about Sister Pam’s training and so the ministry grew.

ORPHAN CARE PROGRAMME

Unfortunately the number of AIDS orphans is growing. Carryou Ministry cares for orphans, vulnerable And needy children. Children and their guardians are assisted with food, clothes and usable items from different donors. It is fulfilling to read the caregivers reports and learn that the children appreciate what the ministry does for them.

Caregivers provide the following support:

a)   Physical: A cooked meal per day and a food parcel for children who have no
other support. Teach the children to cook, clean their homes, and wash their
clothes, attend school daily, and help with homework.
b)   Emotional:  Children are counseled and attend Carryou support groups, learn
skills to feel worthy.
c)   Spiritual:  Children are taught to appreciate what they have, thank God, read the Bible and pray.
d)   Social: Care-givers visit children’s homes to assess their needs, note and report any problems or abuse, and support guardians, Grannies or the child who is head of the house.  We help apply for ID’s and Birth Certificates.

There are 800 children in Carryou’s care and they are divided into two project groups. The first is the Drop-in Centre in Toekomsrus, and the second is the Elandsvlei rural school feeding scheme. We hope to be able to establish a dedicated Drop-In Centre in this area soon.

These children depend on sponsors for food and clothing. Caregivers make sure these children attend school regularly, take care of their needs and make sure no abuse is taking place. The children look to the Caregivers as their friends and helpers.
